Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city, with a population of more than 6.000.000 in its metropolitan area. Since Philip II of Spain made it the political centre of the country it has been home to a rich history and an intense cultural life, which reflects itself in its many monuments and the characteristic flavour of its streets. 

Madrid is also the industrial, financial, and commercial centre of Spain, and it hosts some of the most important universities and research centres in the country. Aeronautics, telecommunications,  space and railway companies, among others, have R&D centres and production facilities in the area.

Madrid is located in the centre of Spain, on a plain 600 m over the sea level, with a mountain range to its NW. It has a dry climate, with comparatively cold winters and hot summers.

Places to visit

Most of the best known  monuments in Madrid are located in the historical centre, including the Royal Palace, the Opera House, the National Library, and some of the most important art museums in the world, such as the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. The area of Madrid de los Austrias has a characteristic atmosphere.
